The Film-Makers’ Cooperative, the first artist-run non-profit organization devoted to the dissemination of experimental film and media art, proudly includes two innovative collectively authored works for this first edition of CO-.
The first film is an iconic work of antiwar artistic practice featuring the work of a large swath of important international experimental filmmakers and the second one a searching, diaristics and formally daring video work in which a group of British artists go in search of America.
The Film-Makers’ Cooperative was founded in New York City in 1961 by a group of 22 pathbreaking experimental filmmakers and artists, and from then it supports, distributes, preserves, and screens artists and artworks from their collection which spans the history of film and media art.
It’s a membership-based, non-contractual and non-exclusive artist cooperative, meaning that artists maintain control over the rights and prices of their films. Since its creation in the 60s, membership to the Coop and opportunity to deposit work for distribution has been open to all on a non-discriminatory basis. This policy has seen them build a collection of works created by artists from all backgrounds, including key works in the history of film and media art by queer, women and Black artists, often supporting such work in advance of mainstream art and film institutions. Nowadays, their collection is one of the largest repositories of film and media art in the world, numbering nearly 6,000 works.
