"Window" is a collaborative film project created by the Artist Film Workshop collective, featuring contributions by a selection of Australian and international filmmakers. "Window" was made in response to the first Australia-wide COVID-19 related lockdown in 2020.
Each filmmaker contributed one roll of black and white celluloid film shot through a window of their house, documenting the visual aspects particular to their confinement. Together, these films form a portrait of domestic isolation, collectively examining the cinematic potential of the contemporary social order.

Biography
Artist Film Workshop (AFW) is an open, membership based artist collective and not-for-profit organisation which provides access to knowledge and resources for filmmakers and artists in Melbourne. It was founded in 2011, but found its first laboratory home in 2012. AFW holds regular screenings and workshops for people interested in film or working with sound and vision. They have a darkroom for film processing and a dry lab for editing and post production. The workshop maintains a 16mm contact printer and optical printer with custom-made electronics, 16mm and 8mm cameras, projectors and a screening space. AFW does not typically make collaborative work as a group. Rather AFW is a place for individuals to work on their own projects. The "Window" piece was an exception, given the exceptional circumstances of Covid.

Metodology
During the lockdown there was concern that the spirit of the collective lab could slip away. Rather than letting this happen, we decided to undertake a simple group project - all in our own isolation. The workshop members couldn't attend the lab itself, so film stock was posted out to them and using their own cameras, they each shot a roll or two on the theme and posted them up to Nanolab for developing. The developed rolls were then forwarded on to Memorylab where they were scanned. Each member then had the opportunity to make whatever they wanted from their own rolls, while one member volunteered to edit all the rolls together into the group project. This video edit was then converted back to 16mm at Nanolab for projection in anamorphic format.
